The Mick Coben Darts Trophy

Dart players please put Sunday September 23 into your diaries because that’s when we’ll be staging the Mick Coben Darts Championship. This is our annual championship, named in honour of Mick the Coal, who was a longstanding member of the Club until his death a couple of years ago. Mick was much loved and we wanted to have a celebration of his long support of the Club, so we chose one of his favourite sports as the best way of doing that.

The Mick Coal Trophy is a lovely little statuette made of coal, although it never leaves its place behind the bar because its quite fragile, but Mick’s brother in New Zealand always puts up a cash prize and the winner will get to have their name on the honours board. We’ll release details nearer the time but there should be an entry form going up on one of the noticeboards very soon and the day itself should start in early afternoon.

Meanwhile, we can’t promise you a lot of sport on our TVs this week because the footballers are taking a break for next weekend’s internationals, with England playing on Saturday evening. During the week we have Wales-Ireland playing in the newly-invented UEFA Nations League on Thursday, alomg with Scotland-Belgium or the Northampton-Quins rugby match on Friday evening, while the BMW Championship golf starts on Thursday evening.

Incidentally England are playing Spain on Saturday and then Switzerland on Tuesday night and we’d love to see you all in watching.
